Orlando Guiang’s Delta Flyer

Although the premise of Star Trek Voyager didn’t allow us to see many Starfleet vessels, it still introduced us to a few unique designs. Ships like the Nova and Prometheus were prime examples. One little ship that certainly was a departure from the norm was the Delta Flyer, designed by the Voyager helmsman Tom Paris. This craft was built to be fast and equipped with a formidable array of weapons.

This replica was built using the resin kit by Alliance models, available at Federationmodels.com. The ship comes with a hollow main hull along with a number of other pieces that you attach. These include the cockpit canopy, impulse engines, the top assembly, the back hatch, and others. Like most of these resin kits, construction is straightforward. Most of your time is spent priming, painting and applying the decals. I should note that I used superglue gel to attach all the pieces. It provides better hold and control. As for the colors used:

  • Main hull – Testor’s light gray
  • Cockpit, phasers and top detail – Testors Armor Sand
  • Bussard collectors and nacelles – Red and Bright blue

The model comes with nice decal sheet. Some of these decals are large and you have to be careful because they are delicate. In fact, all the lines you see which represent the hull plates on the bottom side are all decals. I recommend using a 50/50 mix of Elmer’s glue and water to add more hold for the decals. After applying the decals, a clear dullcoat was applied to seal the model.

I think this is a great kit. It’s accurate and large in size measuring 12 inches in length. I think the only downside is the price. At $90.00 it is expensive so you’ve got to really want this one. I highly recommend it if you want to add this unique ship to your collection.
