Joel Tavera’s Monogram Flying Sub

After building a number of the Moebius Flying Sub models that old Monogram 1/60 scale Flying Sub beckoned me. It was to be sealed but not before some modifications were made to it. The original floor was reworked to reflect the light panels and the hatch that was in the studio set. The top circular beam’s holes were drilled out and the ladder was positioned off to the side of one of the beams. The front controls were changed to look like the set with aftermarket walls and the top docking rings and their hatches. Additionally two tiny fire extinguishers were whipped up along with the addition of one hidden LED to ultimately illuminate the interior. The original figures were kept.

The front viewport was expanded as the studio miniature’s and each end of the front bulk head was reshaped with a taper. Two white LEDs were secured to the front spot lights and two red LEDs were used for the engines. The power source for the Flying Sub model was a watch battery that was situated behind the removable engine bulk head. Plenty of room.

Tamiya acrylic Flat Yellow, Flat Blue, Chrome Silver and Flat Orange were airbrushed with Testors Putty and lots of making tape. As with the studio blue prints I opted to airbrush vague impressions of where the arresting hook and cargo hatch would be. Unfortunately time escaped me so that spot light guards were not made at this time but they’ll be applied later.

This model, like the Invaders Saucer and the Spindrift were always neat because of the cool way the interior was displayed.
