William Watkin’s Mummy

I got this off eBay with two other monster models. All were billed as “already started;” this one turned out to be a glue-bomb. So, I figured I could use it as practice, since I haven’t done many figures lately.

After scrubbing off the old paint, I went after the seams with Xacto knife, file, sandpaper, and Bondo, and eventually got them fairly well tamed. Everything was evened out with a coat of Krylon white primer.

For the monuments, I mixed Anita’s craft acrylics Desert Sand, True Red, and Coffee, and airbrushed them on. A coat of Future, then pin-wash with Folk Art Dark Charcoal. The hieroglyphs were painted with pastel acrylics. The sand is Anita’s Sandstone.

Base color for the figure is Model Master Sand 4720. The face and hand are Anita’s Coffee; the hair is Folk Art Dark Charcoal. I used other craft acrylics to darken the dangling ends of the bandages. A coat of Future, then a wash of Winsor-Newton Vandyke Brown oil paint thinned with mineral spirits brought out details and gave some depth. More relief was achieved with various mixes of browns.

This kit brought back memories of the original Aurora monsters that I built back in the ‘60s. It’s parked on my desk at work as a Halloween decoration
