Steve Jurgens’ Apollo 11 Eagle

This is my recently completed client build of the old Monogram 1/48 scale Apollo 11 Eagle kit.  The model was build over a period of 12 months and was heavily accurized using aftermarket resin/photo-etch parts and decals.

The model makes heayy use of gold, black, aluminum, and chrome silver bare metal foils as well as Duck brand black and white adhesive backed vinyl paper.  White rivets were dotted across the upper ascent stage surfaces using a toothpick dipped in thinned white enamel paint.  2 mil amber-gold Kapton tape was used extensively (as on the actual LEM) with Tamiya transparent orange brushed over the top to simulate the darker gold appearance of the thicker 5 mil Kapton.

The model is shown during descent to the moon’s surface and sits about 10 inches high atop an acrylic rod and base.  The base features a lunar surface decal printed from a photo of the actual Apollo 11 landing site. The base looks remarkably three dimensional when viewed at an angle.
