On the Bench 307: Bob Lum’s Enterprise

Enterprise under construction

I have had this kit since the early 2000’s and it was finally time to put it together 16 years later. I wanted to light the kit and have individual switches to turn on 1) Upper and lower dome lights 2) Red and green upper saucer lights 3) Lower saucer lights 4) RH bussard lights 5) LH bussard lights 6) Green shuttle dome and 7) Sensor dish light. The light behind the sensor dish is non cannon but I wanted to do it.

I used the larger dish because I like the way it looks, and to hide the leds. The lower dome is from the pilot version. I had to use it because I used the proper one on a kitbash. That is what I get for bad eyesight. Paint is Testors Aircraft Gray. Model shops have disappeared in my area and I had to make due with what was available at Michaels. LED’s were purchased at a local Home Hardware as well as the switches and the wiring. The box is from a local dollar store. I used male/female connectors to have the battery pack outside the box. Final cost of the kit and all the materials to light, paint and display = $100 CAD.

This is the 4th Polar Lights USS Enterprise kit that I have built. I would cut the decal sheets next time as they are too large and prone to tearing on application. All in all I am pretty happy with how she turned out with my limited skill. Next on my workbench is the 1/1000 Polar Lights Klingon D7. Also purchased in the early 2000’s. I will light this kit as well.
