John Ovington’s Space Jockey

Here are pics of my semi-complete Halcyon Space Jockey. I bought this guy a while back when I first discovered eBay. I’ve seen plenty more Space Jocks that sold for way less than I paid, but I was new to eBay was sure I’d never see one again. Being my first vinyl model, I was a bit surprised by how unstable the material can be.  The gun/ telescope/ intergalactic vibrator is not yet attached, so in the pics it’s kind of mashing the Jock in the face.

The base was very warped, so I cut an MDO ring to fit up inside to force it to sit flat.

I had a great time painting this thing. I watched that part of the film with the Jockey about a dozen (if not 100) times, and saw this weird play of warm and cool, so I went with it. The kit pieces were based with automotive lacquer primer, and painted exclusively with artist’s acrylics.

All of my washes were very controlled. Nowhere on the whole kit is anything just one tone or color. Lots of back and forth. I wanted to avoid just “straight black or brown” in any of my dark washes. They all had mix-downs or reds, greens, blues, but no true black. I tried to put something unexpected in all my colors, like almost all my highlight colors had a touch of metallic or iridescent in them just for alien love. I’ll probably do a little more “rusting” once the figures are squared away.

What are stalling me are the figures that come with the kit. I hate that they are all in exactly the same pose. So I want chop them up to repose them to re-create the scene where Dallas is standing in front of the Jock (in awe), and Kane is helping Lambert up the side of the base. I’m sort of apprehensive about cutting up the only set of little astronauts I have. If anyone has advice on reposing those little vinyl guys, I would appreciate hearing it.
