Joe W. Michael’s SeaQuest

I recently completed the Monogram SeaQuest DSV submarine model. I took a little bit of a different approach to the process of painting it. First, I sprayed it with a flat blue, then sprayed again with both metal flake sapphire and a Krylon window frost blue paint. The frost paint is not really designed for models, so I don’t know if I would recommend it for other builders – it reacted to the other paint and the model surface in an odd kind of way.

Anyways, then I sprayed it again several times over with metal flake jade, and finally with the metal flake sapphire. I sealed it with a clearcoat sealant. For the model base, I found some texturized “flocking” style paint by Krylon that you would normally use to texture a ceramic pillar to make it look like stone or wood or something. I used the standard brown color of that, and then while it was still wet, sprayed it over lightly with some of the blue and the green. It really makes the base look like it is underwater.

For the interior bay of the SeaQuest, I just glued all the mini ships and such onto the bay floor and then blanket sprayed it metallic silver. All in all the model went together fairly quickly. Some of the pieces did not match up with their counterparts as perfectly as I hoped, so some minimal sanding was required. The ship turned out looking very “CGI” as the original was, and I am very pleased!
