Doug Cowles’ 22 inch Enterprise

This is a lost post from 2005

‘ve taken a step back in time from my Refit Enterprise and built the original Enterprise to compliment it. This was the ERTL 22″ Cut Away.   There’s not much to be said that hasn’t already been covered and since I used much of the guidance already posted on the site, it would be redundant.

My E is painted Testors Light and Dark Ghost Gray and Primer Gray and I used DLM parts and JT Graphics decals. All excellent products as usual. I used the reference photos available of Greg Jein’s model as guidance.

One feature I’m pleased with are the bussard collectors. I used amber colored turn signal bulbs with the filaments removed as a form for the fan blades. The fan blades are made out of narrow drafting tape. Strips are placed over the amber bulbs, trimmed and shaped and then painted silver.

I made an adapter for the inside of the warp engine from 1″ PVC pipe. The outside of the pipe fit perfectly in the warp engine and the inside of the pipe fit the base of the bulb. I inserted the adapter and bulb far enough in the warp engine to allow the outer dome to seat on the front with the fan blades right behind it. Once the assembly was epoxied in to fill any gaps, I painted the outer dome with Testors Clear Amber and then added the small details.

I could see this assembly looking really cool with the light circuit boards available behind it shining through.
