Philip Hamrick’s Mercury 9
The Mercury 9 model from Pegasus Hobbies is another great kit. It has endless possibilities. I gave mine a launch site look based on the box art but with distinct differences. The base is three layers of 3/4″ plywood. The exhaust trench is cut into the top and middle layers. I used a concrete texture spray paint from Floquil for this. There are also conduit tunnels cut in the bottom of the top layer from each spotlight and the rocket to the control building which houses the driver board, battery, and switch. The lighting package is a custom kit from VooDoo FX. The big red “9” and the vertical black stripe with numbers on the right fin are the decals supplied by Pegasus. The rest are from a detailing set. The set includes a piece of transparent film with launch control room details for the big windows in the tower. This was mounted in front of a piece of translucent plastic included in the lighting kit to diffuse the led and give the transparency an even lighting. The nacelle lights are red led’s behind the domes painted clear red. All the vehicles and figures are z scale.
