Philip Hamrick’s Derelict
The Derelict is scratch built using styrofoam balls and cone, ping pong balls, beads, and clear sheet styrene. The Jupiter 2 is a Johnny Lightning ship. The background is from cafepress.com. The body of the Derelict is a 10″ ball and the forward section is a 4″ ball. The bases of the antennas are cut from 2″ balls. The neck is a 2″ wide, 1″ thick base piece and the rear is an 8″ cone. All these pieces are covered with a decoupage sealer. It took several coats of the sealer sanded in between coats to achieve the right texture. The last 1 3/4″ of the cone was cut off to make the end even with the propulsion units(?). The indentations were made by pressing a metal ruler into the cone. I cut approximately 1/3 of a ping pong ball off and glued it onto a whole ball then added a small bead to the center of the raised section. Six of these were glued together then glued to the cone. The ship was primed and painted as a whole. The antennas were assembled by section so they could be held firmly with a small clamp while curing. Each shaft has a metal wire in the center. They were attached after the main body was completed. The total length of the Derelict is 24 1/2″.
I took the Jupiter 2 apart and removed the landing legs then covered the openings with .010″ styrene. The power core was held by the landing leg piece so it had to be glued in place. I drilled through it at an angle then painted it before gluing it back in.
