Building the model took more steps than I expected. Fact is that the new AMT model is molded in clear plastic which is coated by some kind of oily layer. I were not able to wash the oil off, so I needed to do a groundation first. After that I glued the first parts together. Surprisingly the Starcrafts conversion kit fitted the AMT kit really good, there were not much gaps to fill. The templates for the aztec pattern did a great job, too. Here and there some of the paint went of when I removed them from the model but they fitted the model really good and it was pretty easy to repaint those small spots where the paint sticked to the templates. This issue had to do with the oily coat of the new AMT kit. Applying the decals brought a good and a bad surprise. The new decals from AMT are pretty good. I only used the lifeboats, but they are of good quality. The bad thing about these decals is that AMT didn’t include enough lifeboats. When I reached the lower side of the saucer section I went out of decals. This is why I had to go an grab an additional Enterprise kit for a second decal sheet.
All in all can recommend the materials I used. The new AMT model needs to be washed with a very strong cleaner or needs to be covered with a strong groundation first. The new decal sheet has a very good quality and makes it a lot easier to apply the life boat decals because here is an entire row of life boats together on one bigger decal. You don’t have to place every single life boat. But it doesn’t contain enough life boat decals. DMC’s Aztec Templates and the custom decals did a great job.
My special thanks goes to Paul King, the owner of Defiant Model Creations. Your great work with the templates and your good advice and support were a great help and made it a lot easier for me to do this job.
