Michael Walker’s T Rex

I painted the piece using a method I saw demonstrated at Wonderfest. Basically, it’s a technique which uses clear color coats over a glazed base coat. HUH? Actually, it’s easier than it sounds. Here’s how: I painted the base coat with Tamiya Deck Tan (belly) and Tamiya JA Green (topside). I then mixed Liquetex Acrylic Gel medium with Liquetex acrylic paint (burnt sienna – belly, burnt umber – topside)painted the mixture on the Rex, than wiped it off with a moist rag. This leaves the color in the recesses of the Rex, and tints the base color, essentially a very quick ‘wash’ technique. When that was dry, I mixed a drop (and I do mean drop!) of color into Tamiya clear, and slowly airbrushed the ‘color’ onto the Rex. By slowly building up various colors, you create a realistic depth to the skin. Shadows where done the same way with a drop of black in the Tamiya clear. The eyes and teeth were pick out with detail brushes and that was it. A great weekend project, with a new technique….gotta’ love this hobby!!
