Karl Machtanz’ The Man from Planet X
I built the Geometric Design model The Man from Planet X, since I haven’t seen a recent built model of this alien I thought building this model with lights would really
bring this model to life. trying to keep it as close to the movie as possible I had to scratch build a new chest box from styrene sheet as the one provided in the kit is solid resin and with LED lighting inside along with various devices to add interest. I secured the light box with earth magnets to the alien chest for future maintenance of the LED’s.
The next item that had to be addressed is the helmet light which shines a light directly in the face of the alien, the air hose was also a solid resin piece and replacing it with a hollow hose encircled with O ring material representing hoses was used with wiring inside connected to the helmet’s front respirator, the wiring continues to the modified air tanks on the aliens back which has two AAA batteries concealed inside the air tanks. the lights can be turned on or off from a switch beneath the chest box, all in all this was a most challenging project, the model was finished with acrylic and enamel paints.
