Bob Canfield’s Enterprise A

Here are a few contributing pics of my 1/1400 scale Enterprise A (Starcrafts Models).

This little guy (8.5 inches long) was simple to construct (only 4 pieces and some decals). The hard part is the size. It can be a challenge to paint all the tiny details on such a small model. Some of the hints I picked around the modeling web pages really helped:

  • Base coat is airbrushed semi gloss white with a lttle grey mixed in to tone it down.
  • Used acrylics to paint the small details–the water base paint makes ite easy to fix mistakes.
  • After all the detail painting is complete, use the airbrush to lightly dust the entire model with off-white paint mixture mentioned above. It really tones down the colors.
  • Drill small holes use straight pins (cut to 3/4 inch) to join the saucer/neck section and nacelles to the secondary hull.
  • Airbrush clear coat to seal in the decals.
  • A set of magnifying goggles is strongly recommended to build this one.

I wanted something in scale with my enterprise D and E (still under construction). The last picture shows the Enterprise A next to a Space Shuttle Orbiter; which is pretty close to the same scale (about 1 inch long) . The space shuttle is actually a tie tac. Length of the Enterprise is 305m and the length of the shuttle is 37m.
