Phil Giunta’s X Wing and TIE Fighter
This is Darth Vader’s TIE fighter chasing Luke’s X-Wing. They are both the MPC/ERTL kits from the early to mid 90’s, the 12″ X-Wing and the 10″ Vader TIE Fighter. The kits are straight builds with the only modifications in the detail paint and weathering.
The basecoats were done with Model Master spray paints, Flat Light Aircraft Gray for the X-Wing and white primer for Vader’s TIE. Yes, I said white primer. I decided to use white to really show the weathering I added using the charcoal stick.
I added similar, and even more, weathering to the X-Wing. I also painted it differently than in the movie and added more detail to the dorsal section behind R2-D2. All detail paint was done using Testors/Model Master bottled paints except the black which was done with a bottled acrylic paint from my local AC Moore. It dries fast and lays on smooth.
I then made a base using wood that I bought from AC Moore and the dowels are also wood. I placed this diorama in two model contests, one at the East Coast Hobby Show in Fort Washington, where it won third place in Science Fiction, and the other at my local Hobbytown USA where it won third place in Space Ship and third place in Best Paint.
