On the Bench 231b: Mark Lyter’s NX-01

This is the Polar Lights NX-01 and this baby is HUGE!!!. My wife and kids got it for me last x-mas and am now starting to work on it. I’m sure that a lot of you have read about this kit and that there are a LOT of parts.

This is gonna be my second try at lighting up a model, and this has room to spare. I thought about which lights to use and settled on LED’s. I got mine from some store displays after this last xmas (they were gonna throw them in the trash). I sprayed all the parts a medium aluminum for right now. I’m not sure if I’m gonna hand paint the aztec patterns or get the templates. The insides were painted a gloss black the stop light bleed through. The clear domes for the engines I painted a clear red (just pored some in and swirled it around a couple of times) til I got the right shade I wanted. The clear parts on the sides of the engines and deflector a couple coats of clear blue.

Now comes the fun part, I test fitted 2 blue LEDS into the engine and only 1 red in the front for the time being. Just to get an idea on how it’s gonna look and how hard its gonna be to fit them in there. I have to use thinner wires for the LEDS to run through the struts into the body, and I am thinking of using flat ribbon cables that are used to connect computer hard drives to the motherboard. They will fit in there nicely and will be long enough. So with the lights in, I hooked the up and hoped it would look good. Still a lot to do but its a start.
