Round 2 posted a statement today in their blog regarding the Enterprise from the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie. It simply said:
Round 2 is not proceeding with development on the U.S.S. Enterprise model kit, as based on the 2009 film, Star Trek. We will continue to focus on classic Star Trek by reissuing nostalgic favorites and enhanced re-releases as well as some all-new tooling of favorite Trek subjects.
You may recall that Round 2 announced they would be releasing a kit of the new Enterprise back in May 2009. The Trek Movie site posted a great article and featured this prominently in June 2009. Mock ups of the box art were later shown at iHobbyExpo and Wonderfest.
After repeated delays, Round 2 finally posted images of the mock up for the kit in December 2010 on their blog site. Almost immediately, the post and images disappeared. The artwork was removed from the Round 2 site as well as the press release from 2009 announcing the kit. Modelers were left scratching their head, wondering what was going on.
I guess we’ll still have to wait and see about a big 1:350 scale Classic Enterprise. Round 2 has been talking about doing that kit since they acquired the Star Trek license. Shortly after the iHobbyExpo trade show in late 2010, they company began to solicit orders for a 1:350 TV Enterprise, but they deny that they have announced the kit. They promise an official announcement regarding that kit at Wonderfest in May.
