Hi there,

I’m looking at modelling an Ambassador variant myself and was where you were able to acquire the lower saucer’s senor upgrade dome as it’s not standard on the Enterprise-C AMT/ERTL model kit. Did you use the one that came with the USS Yamaguchi lit model?

It would be nice if someone was able to make it as a resin mod extra to buy separately.

Well I was definitely buying one before but now I am DEFINITELY buy one. Frank just keeps cranking out fantastic kits and although almost everything is great this might be the best yet. The pictures certainly make the faces and parts look like they were in that initial build we’ve seen pictures of previously which I believe was resin. Summer won’t be here soon enough, maybe in time for Wonderfest.

I picked this up from a dealer at Jaxcon 2011 and had never seen it before that. It is a very good resin kit with about the least amount of cleanup work I have ever had to do on a resin kit. Painting it was very straight forward and was done with a mix of airbrushing and hand painting. It is classic Aurora size and looks great on the shelf with my other scifi kits.

I’m not sure anyone else needs to go get themselves banned. I appreciate the support, but the point is that I was not banned because of anything I said. You have a couple guys with an axe to grind and they didn’t need much of an excuse to smack me down. Nothing can change that except the guy that runs owns Hobbytalk. And he doesn’t seem to care!

wow i love this that’s awesome and a great tribute to George Reeves too. …I also had an idea for you, to make the cape a little longer like the one he wore in the TV show it had a longer opening at the neck so the loop from the back would look a lil bigger but its a great model didn’t mean that as criticism, but more just an idea for a the Realism factor. Maybe when i build mine i will do that lol. Also I think I would like to make a version that’s like a Clark from the TV show Smallville and use a Tom Welling head lol. One could go on and make one from each superman from TV and movies, altering each a little to look more like that Actor’s version of this classic Superman pose. Now that would be a great collection lol. ….your work is awesome…. I have been seeing some wonderful models here thanks very much … Also how tall is this kit like what size would you say the figure is of Superman like a 6 inch or 10 or twelve thanks very much Neal Anderson

Geoffdude was banned last year from another site, a somewhat popular vintage action figure site, I will not name, for basically being “a jerk” on a regular basis. Geoffdude’s posts make the Simpson’s Comic Book Guy seem like Emily Post. Be glad you left them all behind.

Day 2 of Banned from HT…

The tread “I missed it. ” opened yesterday in HT’s and it rapidly attracted 65 posts.

Among the posts was a lengthy one from Mr. Mercs explaining he is the real victim in this situation. He concluded by advising all he is leaving HT.

Continuing under the adult maturity theme; Moderator “Griffworks” closed it and offered his biased explanation of the situation. Later, he opened the thread up so he could explain to everyone he is not biased and inform everyone, “Quite a few of you have your own biases…” before closing it again. It is funny with foolish people who do wrong and then fail to comprehend the more they say, the more they reveal about their true character.

Someone deleted page of posts from the “The kit factory building moebius jupiter 2 next! ” thread including the so-called offending post. This thread has also been closed and providing a great example of closing the barn door long after the horses have departed.

Hobbytalk deserves special recognition for effectively transforming their web board’s environment into one of the more hostile and anti-social sites for people to discuss and share information online related to various hobbies. It is a great place to glean information as long as one keeps in mind the natives are very hostile and will bite with the least provocation.

Even though I’ve followed this since its beginning I appreciate the explanation. What amazes me the most is Griff’s feable explanation: “Simon has been told to play straight and ignore such comments. Up to this point, he had been doing fine, so it was felt his outburst, while unwarranted and over the top, was somewhat understandable. Another such outburst will likely see him receive more than a Warning, I assure you.”
So calling you a “Nazi” was “understandable”? I’m Gobsmacked! To add further insult Simon has banned himself, but he still moderates several HT forums…
Glad you’ve taken the high road on this one Steve. Based on the feedback, you’re the better person.

I don’t agree with the move-on comment.

“Banning” is nothing more that the 21ST Century version of “black-listing” and “black-balling.”

People are being banned from their livelihoods for language that is only offensive to some other people. People are being “banned” from making a living, of feeding themselves, from careers and jobs that they have given their lives to. What is going on here is no different.

Come-on people — “banning” in a hobby?

After several unpleasant episodes where the moderator was piling on somebody for no significant reason, I know that I stay away from Hobbytalk. The episode where a very small group of un-named people wanted to kill an aftermarket project because if added a very significant detail to the Moebius Jupiter-2 model, I began to see how nasty, mean-spirited people with an obvious, but unstated agenda would kill something wonderful just for the fun of it.

If Culttvman gets “banned” then Hobbytalk gets “banned” too. That’s the way it should.

It’s pretty pitiful when you have to bring the rule of law, freedom of speech, the Constitution into something as simple and beautiful as a hobby.

I am serious.

This business of “banning” is creeping into everything. MSNBC has their “Newsvine Team” carrying on bans when their computer algorithm for identifying spam or a hyperlink is activated. Most likely this excuse is just the one they manufacture to get rid of people “Newsvine” doesn’t agree with.

Businesses ban employees and contractors simply because they don’t like somebody. There’s no recourse and certainly no protection. You can’t stand before your accusers because the whole “banning” thing is done in secret, to protect a bunch of nameless thugs, bullies, and fascist pig-faced goons.

Banning is showing up every where. Banning is replacing the rule of law with a rule of fear, because let’s face it, Steve, you’ve been screwed.

Isn’t there some organization dealing with this. Some group? Some group of concerned citizens?

I am truly sorry for you, Steve. Is there anything I can do?

This guy is obviously no brain surgeon. All you have to do is compare the current thread at Hobbytalk with the screen caps you saved for your Dec. 8th, 2011 post, “The unpleasant side of the hobby…”, to see he altered the thread. His tirade and your response posts have been edited out. Did he think no one was going to look at your screen caps of the original posts and compare?

He is guilty of all of the things he accused you of; being a nazi, a commie, altering the thread, re-writing facts, omitting your response, banning you because you have fallen out of favor, controlling his forum like a tyrant. Yet he still manages to try and paint himself as a David vs. Goliath. He gives lip service to Democracy and “The American Way” while calling for a boycott on you. I wonder if he knows the meaning of hypocrisy? This guy has some set of balls.

I’m completely amazed at how this all unfolded. It’s even more bizarre than my situation at HT.

I was banned because of my opinion on some of the garage kits. One of the members (actually two but that part is fixed) there harassed me in private messages enough to make me respond in a hostile manner. The guy did a search on me an sent me my address in a private message (I know! That’s CREEPY). Anyway, I didn’t know who this person was–for all I knew he could have been some psychotic freak–so I responded by sending him HIS address. lol! It got me banned from HobbyTalk. It’s a facto! That’s how it happened. Griffworks wouldn’t be bothered with my explanation. He didn’t want to hear whatever led to my response at all.

People are behind you, Steve.

This was another simple but good kit from Pegasus. It was molded in their soft styrene but regular modeling glues work fine on it, I used Testors liquid cement. I painted the exterior of Martin’s ship with Rustoleum metallizer paint which I have used on other plastic and model rockets. It gives a nice, inexpensive metallic finish. Martin’s spacesuit was done with Testors rattle can metallic green. The subject was great too as I watched the show growing up in the ’60s.

We used UPS to ship all of our non-freight merchandise at the candle company I used to work for, and they were constantly damaging our goods. FED-EX did a much better job in my opinion, but they were more expensive and lost our bid for business. You get what you pay for I guess.

I picked this one up from Frank himself at an IPMS contest in Orlando on October 1. I built it immediately after I got it home. It is a very simple kit but a nice one, typical of Moebius, and went together with no problems at all. So now he is on the shelf with my other four comic book heroes kits.

Nice build here and I think the backdrop you made was very creative. I really like how it gives you a sense of motion. It’s just like what you see on screen in that famous climactic scene. Really nice!

Just came across a slotted version in the long box on eBay, and I have one in the short box sitting on a shelf in my garage presently, so I think we can chalk that one up as confirmed as both the last long box and first short box issue.

Hi Steve. I quit making models in 2005, but started again a couple of months ago. I just had to look up my favorite modeling site again! (My first new project, a modified Lindberg Space Base, can be seen in the Space section at the Finescale Modeler site.) As for the interest in the Scarecrow model, I’m thrilled. And humbled – really. Thanks, guys. By the way, Steve, I think I was going to send you pics of another model back in 2005, but never got around to it. An Aurora/MPC Superman converted to a silver age Magnus, Robot Fighter, 4000 A.D. Battling a scratchbuilt bot. I’ll see if I can borrow it from the friend I gave it to, and take some pics for you.

Thank you for your kind words, Northman and rkoenn. I was pleased and surprised to see the model posted here again! The Scarecrow and his horse, Gehenna, is a conversion of Aurora’s “Comics Scenes” Lone Ranger – originally released in 1974. Back in 2000, I bought the kit through eBay for about $15. I see it’s now selling for $100 to $200!

Simply fantastic models coming next year. I’m particularly blown away with the Bride and Frankenstein as you said yourself. The other really exciting kits are the really big Saturn 5, Nautilus, Enterprise, Creature (now all we need is a Wolfman from Moebius), Munster’s House, etc., etc. These companies are really putting out excellent products and many of those in your pictures are on my buy list. Steve – I just had an after thought, and since you are asking for feedback I thought I might add; When I first visited your site many years ago, it was a great source of sci-fi modeling inspiration and information. Over the years as new information media has appeared, there are of course more options. One of the sources of information I have found to be entertaining and informative, are You Tube tutorials. Some guys are better at it than others obviously. Here are some examples:

Steve, I think social media sights such as Facebook and Twitter have rendered chat rooms and a lot of forums obsolete. There are still some thriving model and hobby forums out there however. I personally have found that your chat room isn’t what it used to be; the few occasions I have been back really didn’t offer much discussion concerning model building. Just my opinion of course.

Absolutely stunning build. I loved that show when it was on Disney in its’ original run and always wanted to come up with a Halloween costume of him. Your custom build is just perfect and really captures Dr. Syn/The Scarecrow. What figure did you use to model the Scarecrow from himself? Again, I really like this creation of yours.

@ Jay Chladek : Forgot to mention one other change in the model I don’t believe you brought up in your essay. Sometime during the retool of the engineering hull, the nacelle pylon holes/slots were moved slightly back towards the shuttlebay. This actually made the kit more accurate in relation to the 11 foot filming model.

Great article, by the way. Love the attention to the minutiae. Now you just need to update the article to include the Round 2 reissues ( I’m especially fond of the glow-in-the-dark “Tholian Web” edition…actually made me build one of these kits again, after many years ). Part 5, perhaps?

@ Jay Chladek : You had requested if anyone knew of any other differences between the older and later kits, to let you know. If I’m not misktaken, didn’t the older kits have the extra little stem at the front of each of the four ‘intercoolers’? I seem to remember this, because, as a kid, I didn’t recognize the stem as a detail on the part, and snapped the stems off instead.

Also, I seem to remember the four ribbed panels at the rear of the nacelles having less pronounced slopes on the tops and bottoms.

@ CaptApril; I actually did have a couple of slotted nacelle versions in long boxes in the ’70s. I remember being surprised by the redesign the first time I got one, as I was building a replacement for an older long box kit( it was the edition with the lights in the nacelles and the saucer, with the orange bussard collectors that my Dad had built for me in 1970… without the lights ) which I had basically loved ’til it fell apart.

I was surprised that the bussard collectors were now opaque white, but was glad that the pylon assembly had been simplified.
