Jim Apitz' TV Batmobile

These are pictures of my favorite Batmobile, the 1960's tv show version. This model is The Caped Custom garage kit and it was a pleasure to build.

I used the "glass" from a Lincoln Futura kit. Also, no bat emblems are provided for the wheels or doors. I fabricated each by tracing photos of the actual car and then drawing them on my computer. I used paper instead of decals for the door emblems because it more closely resembled the magnetic emblems that were used during the first season.

The model  represents how the actual car looked in episode 1, season 1. I used photos and a video tape from the first show as referrence material. The dash board was decked out with the buttons and orange bat-gadget  labels featured in that first episode.

Two small details not often modeled are the small Barris crests just behind the front wheels. I used chrome foil for these because no photo-etched  crests (of this style) were available at the time.

I did learn a valuable paint tip while finishing this model that I'd like to pass along. The car was sprayed with Duplicolor's Universal Gloss Black. I then painted the orange striping with a Testors enamel paint pen. Since the Duplicor paint was not enamel, I could use mineral spirits to whipe off any mistakes I made with the striping (and I made a ton) while not harming the black paint!
