Jim Apitz's Animated Batmobile

This model was built entirely from scratch and represents my very first attempt at a scratchbuilt model. I made detailed drawings that were  then made into cardboard templates. From those templates, I cut and shaped some rigid Styrofoam and laminated a plastic body to it with super glue.

The body panels were made from sheets of flat stock .020" thick. The afterburner was made from an old magic marker and the  wheels are from an AMT/Ertl Batmobile kit. The model was built in several sub-assemblies.

The cockpit is one, the after burner is another, and the areas on each side of the afterburner are the third and fourth. The  headers that protrude from the sides of the hood were carved from some leftover flat stock. I painted this Batmobile with a bluish-black mix and buffed it to a not quite glossy finish.

My good fortune with this model has inspired me to scratchbuild again. I have started template work on the latest animated series Batmobile  and hope to have it finished soon.

To achieve the color I simply sprayed the car with a coat of black followed right after by a coat of blue (I use spray cans). I repeated this process several times, with a wet on wet technique. The front grill is not permanently affixed. I'm working on a new, better looking design. I'm kind of proud of this model because it is a one  of a kind. I learned a lot about modeling and developed many skills in the process of bringing it to 3-D life. It was a rewarding experience.

A Batman Beyond version is on the drawing board as well.
