Jim Apitz' 1989 Batmobile

These images are of the AMT/Ertl model Batmobile from Batman and Batman Returns. I built this version based on how the car looked in the first film (it was modified for BR).

I had the opportunity to see the real car in person and the photographs from that visit proved to be a big help in getting the details right.

On both sides of this car, the kit lacked the skid resistant step pads on the huge jet intakes. I fabricated some out of fine black sand paper. The metal pipes just in back of the front tires also needed more detail.

I used model train screening as heat shields and added a bit of blue tint to the pipes to simulate the effect heat had done to the metal. The paint finish is what I'd call semi-gloss black. I achieved this by simply using rubbing compound on gloss black paint.
