This 16-½" beauty is a 3-D movie poster plaque for the 1926 sci-fi classic, "Metropolis". Comes about 90% ready
out of the box. Using my trusty Dremel tool (on the lowest settings) I quickly sanded down the rough back edges. Used the Dremel make a SMALL upwards hole on the back, center to allow hanging with
a finishing nail. Stay about an 1" from the top to support it's own weight. Reinforce the hole by superglueing a small flat washer. Also helps as a guide when hanging.
The small resin
"pimples" on
the front are hand sanded. Plastered a couple of mold imperfections. It looks simple but the detail is full of nooks and cranies. Didn't strive for perfection in sanding, but rather visually perfect. Be sure to wash it clean before plastering.
A metallic Art Deco feel is the natural choice for subject, and medium. Wanted an "expensive antique" appearance. Similar color paints are used because "Metropolis" was
filmed in the industrial steel era of B&W movies. Due to similar metals used, you may not notice she has 9 paints.
First paint the entire surface a single color. Opted
to paint completely by hand. Spray painting is quick, but tricky, and messy. For a best depth perception, use brighter metals on the foremost buildings, base color for secondary structures; and darkest metals for the backgrounds, and smallest buildings. The triangular projections from behind the building are spot lights painted chrome - the brightest metal. The Maria bust is painted a unique metal to really stand out.
Gold for the "Metropolis" lettering is an Art Deco given. The blue lettering is the same blue used on my Masudaya "Metropolis Maria" base as inlaid stone. The
green just worked well for bottom lettering. Tried black for the smallest lettering, but it was TOO MUCH effort with no return. As not to hinder legibility it is best left alone.
