NOTES ON THE 2nd PILOT ENTERPRISE
Several changes were made to the miniature for the second pilot. Most notably being the addition of lights. The
version from the second pilot(Where No Man Has Gone Before) shows up in most episodes. It is the one with the spiked warp endcaps and no white ball on the aft end.
GENERAL NOTES The Pilot version has a glossy
finish. The running lights under the saucer are reflected off the surface. The window patterns do not match the kits.

TOP VIEW
1) Aft dome light.
2) Red stripes.
3) They're on the First Pilot miniature, they are on the Production version. On
Charles Adam's website, he suggests that they are on this version. Stands to reason.
4) It took me a long time to even acknowledge that these markings exist. I never could see them in an actual
episode. They appear to be just borders with no interior color, The two smaller rectangles can be either red or yellow since both colors have been observed. Just not by me.
5) The kit
required massive reshaping of the superstructure. The little square is yellow with red border.
6) The lights have a grey band surrounding them. I would assume that the bands were there to provide
more contrast to the lights.
7) Note the slightly different font. There are no serifs on the "1"s and a different "7" and "R" (see the diagram below by Petri
Blomqvist).

8) As best as I can determine, this is the way this markings look. They are somewhat
obscure on the videos and I have only seen B&W pistures of them. The T shaped marking seems to be the same dark grey as the side bands and the arcs look like they could be red, the forward rectangle is yellow.
9) The four lighted panels are farther inboard. They may also better reflect their position on the Production version. Most of the views that I have seen are at such an angle that distances were
hard to determine.

PROFILE 10) Square off the slanted sides. I reinforced the inside with putty. Be careful and apply
a little at a time. The putty that I used (Squadron Green) softened and distorted the plastic when done too heavily.
11) No crosshatching in the groove of the warp engines.
12) The
forward flat piece should be flush against or at least very close to the engine as well as being wider and having two raised dots on it.
13) The well known spiked endcaps . The caps always looked
a solid deep red to me. I really liked those spikes!
14) The bridge is much taller. The marking is just line with no fill color. Roger Sorensen
has an excellent close up picture of the bridge that gives a good idea as to the exact shape.
15) This is a more accurate view of the contour of the underside of the saucer. Note that the
flat rim is not there and that the leading edge is more at an angle. The area around the sensor array is also more curved.
16) The front edge of the secondary hull is chamfered.
17) Larger dish.
18)The front piece projects past the rim of the hull.
19) The pennant panels are recessed just like the Production version but lack the two ridges and the pinstriping.
20) These are of five little numbers that run along the lower hull. The one at the fantail is 1837 with a small vertical line above it. The one up by the warp pylon is 1384, the next
lower one is 1300 then 705 and 102 up at the forward end.

UNDERSIDE 21) Corrected shape of fantail. The hull in the kit tapers a bit to much. As near as I can tell the fantail width should be
approximately two thirds that of the width of the forward hull.
22) Red with no fill color.
23) White with red border. These, as well as the following two, are hand made.
24) White with black border.
25) Medium grey with dark grey border.
26) Yellow with red border. From the ESTES decal sheet.
27) Red.
28) These are the only lower running lights. The center one is larger/brighter.
29) The "NCC-1701" is larger, stretching from the rings all the way to the rim. These are not as
difficult to find as it may seem.
30)The triangles under the saucer look to be just the outlines with no fill color.
31) These were a real pain to figure out. None of the available photo's
showed anything other than that there was something there and it was not a window. Jeff Brown filled me in. They are grey panels with the inscription "INSPECTION DOOR VENT SYSTEM
CONNECTION" written in two or three lines. Print is too small to duplicate.
Also note that the saucer underside windows are NOT symmetrical. This is probably due to the fact that when
the refurbished after the pilot they only added details to the side that would be facing the camera. I like the look. The rectangle on the port side inside the inner ring is yellow, the one in the
forward area appears to be grey.
32) In the pictures of the Enterprise as she exists now at the Smithsonian has only one of these panels on each engine. There are supposed to be three but
some were lost.

AFT 33) The warp engine endcaps for the second pilot has rows of holes. There are 6 rows. the top row has two and the rest alternate between
seven and eight with a gap between rows 4 and 5. Thomas Models carries them.
34) The impulse engines had more detail.
35) Other than the round end piece, absolutely no detail whatsoever.
36) The three horizontal bars are red, green, and black. The vertical ones are red & black. They are lights.
37)
If you look closely, you will see that the pylon joins the warp engine much lower than the kit has it.
FRONT 38) Illuminated front window
